BSI Kitemark Scheme
From 22nd May 2003, the BSI Kitemark has been awarded to flood protection products that have passed the testing and accreditation system developed by HR Wallingford and partners.
The familiar quality standard mark is now available for flood protection products in two categories, for which BSI Publicly Available Specifications are available. These are:
* PAS 1188-1 Flood protection products – Building apertures
This specifies the designation, testing, factory production control, installation information and marking for removable household products. These include panels to protect doorways (flood doors), covers for airbricks (vent guards), and guards to protect windows and patio doors.
* PAS 1188-2 Flood protection products – Temporary or demountable types
This provides a similar scheme for the testing and accreditation of temporary free-standing barriers which can be used to hold back floodwater at a distance from a house or group of buildings.
(More details of the types of free-standing temporary defences available and their use can be found in the publication Temporary and Demountable Flood Protection: Interim Guidance on Use, R and D Publication 130, published by DEFRA and the Environment Agency, and available on the EA website.)
(A third PAS is currently in preparation which will cover ‘flood skirts’.)
